The Longest Flight on the Shortest Day

 Day 2 - Sunday, Dec 21

This day didn’t happen for us! We were flying on Saturday, Dec 20, and then we crossed the international dateline and we were flying on Monday, Dec 22!  I know in the northern hemisphere that Dec 21 is the shortest day of the year, but really, we shrank it to nothing! Anyway, it’s a long flight (14 hours) to Sydney, but we were well-prepared. Lots of sleeping, movies/shows and occasionally eating. All went smoothly.

Day 3 - Monday, Dec 22 – Arrival, Salesforce, The Zoo Everything worked like clockwork when we landed at 7:30am. The kids were great getting through customs and biosecurity (AU is VERY cautious about invasive species entering the country). Our driver met us and we got to our hotel with some educational information about AU from our driver along the way.  Our hotel is in the heart of Sydney Harbor area – right near Circular Quay, the hub of activity on the famous Sydney Harbor. Our hotels rooms were not ready, but we did a quick change into summer gear (it was mid-70s F) left our bags. The concierge took us to the pool on the 23 rd floor, which was also where one of our rooms was, and showed us the view. It was utterly amazing.  Our first stop was a very convenient one. In The Beginning

Day 1 - Saturday, Dec 20 Let me introduce you just in case you have made your way here without the benefit of knowing the ins-and-outs my family life. I am traveling to Australia/New Zealand with the Helfrichs - Monica (my daughter), Barry (her husband), and their four kids: Evan (15), Carter (13), Gordon (10) and Ruby (8). Debbie is staying behind because long, complicated travel adventures are a bit too much for her to accommodate with her visual impairment. So, we are a family of seven embarking on an adventure of 9286 miles from home (Indianapolis). When people asked me, "Are you going anywhere for the Holidays?" I simply answered, "We are heading south - very south!" After three basketball games this morning - resulting in three victories for Evan, Carter and Gordon - everyone was packed with their new suitcases and backpacks for the trip.
